I considered a career in nutrition at the time…
But as a teenager in Pittsburgh with a pretty weak understanding of how to research career paths on this new thing called Yahoo.com, I brushed the idea aside and instead followed an interest in Economics that developed thanks to a class I took by chance in high school.A driven and hardworking student, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Washington & Jefferson College with a Bachelors in Economics and a Professional Writing concentration. It landed me a job in the Economic Consulting practice of Ernst & Young. I found myself in an interesting and challenging environment where I was exposed to a wide variety of industries. I gained tremendous hard technical analysis skills as well as soft communication and presentation skills.
I kept moving full force in this career, even taking a break to deepen my business knowledge and earn my MBA at Emory University. The entire time I was in this career, health and wellness was at the core of my personal values. I was the one who woke up early while traveling to explore the boutique fitness studios in other cities, and who went to the Whole Foods salad bar at night to get a healthy meal for dinner and lunch the next day rather than the rich dinner out or fast food lunch. Yes, people poked fun at me more than one time for these habits. At first it embarrassed me, and then I learned to embrace it. But the more my career progressed, the more I felt out of place and the more disconnected my profession and my passion became. It finally got to the point that I couldn’t shake the desire to do something more. I wanted to feel passionate about my profession. I wanted to have purpose in my work and to wake up excited about what I was doing. So I quit.
It didn’t actually happen that abruptly. I labored over the decision for over 2 years.
It felt risky and scary, but ultimately, I knew that nutrition was my purpose and passion.
So, I attended Bauman College to tap into a curiosity that I had felt for nearly 20 years. While in school at Bauman, my husband and I decided to expand our family and I got pregnant with my son. This spurred my area of focus and passion within the nutrition world. You can read more about my own pregnancy and postpartum experience, and how it led me to feel called to start working closely with prenatal and postpartum women here.
At the same time, while developing my nutrition practice, I started to network and collaborate with other health and wellness focused businesses. It became clear that my unique background was actually an asset in this space, and I soon realized that I felt right at home at the intersection of nutrition and business.
Now, working with both individuals and businesses, I feel fortunate that my passions and profession have aligned in this way.
